Exhibitions on display at the Quendale Water Mill

The history of crofting in the South Mainland of Shetland is presented in a number of displays and exhibitions.

  • Agricultural Photographs
  • The History Group has an ever expanding archive of photographs which depict the crofting way of life throughout the 20th century. We have selected the best of these photographs for display and interpretive panels describe the scenes and activities depicted.

  • Agricultural Tools

  • This year we are presenting an exhibition of agricultural tools and implements. Some of these can only be described as both “weird and wonderful” and the challenge is to guess the function of each one before referring to the interpretive panel alongside.

  • Display of Coins/Banknotes
  • A new addition this year is our exhibition of coins and banknotes dating back to the 1800's.

  • Agricultural Machinery
  • Over the years the History Group has put together an impressive collection of agricultural machinery and many hours have been spent, over the dark winter months, in restoration and refurbishment. The end result can be seen in the courtyard display. Illustrated interpretive panels describe in detail the function of each item on display.
