Local Area

This section is currently being updated to provide a comprehensive guide to the Local Area. Please check back soon.

There is much to see and do in Quendale Water Mill's surrounding area.

There are lots of easily accessible white sandy beaches scattered around the coastline from Grutness (next to Sumburgh Airport) to St Ninian's (in Bigton).

Several main areas of interest which can be undertaken in the area include Archeaology (Jarlshof, Scatness Dig, Mousa Broch), visiting an authentic Croft House to see how Shetlanders lived in years gone by, bird-watching and pony-trekking.

Bird-watching is particularly popular and with three RSPB sites in the Local Area it is easy to understand why. Try taking a walk around Sumburgh Head to see the spectacular sight created from thousands of birds nesting on the surrounding cliff-face. Puffins (Tammie Nories) are in abundance here and once seen will never be forgotten for their almost comical appearance.

Finding accomodation shouldn't be a problem with options from Self-Catering through to ensuite hotel rooms.
